Just to jump start this Critique Gallery, i'll be posting a portrait that I took last sunday... Type! Never really planned on going into portraits until i got active in TNB. Now, i'm starting to enjoy taking portraiture but I still have that instinct in me to preserve the "ambiance" when taking portraits of people from events if I think the lighting is "good" enough. Took this shot without flash at the expense of higher ISO. Should I go with flash, or do I need to adjust anything when taking portraits? PP done is: Resize, Sharpen, and a little smoothing using portraiture. Flame away!

@don: actually if you noticed since you didn't use flash, there were hard shadows within the face, particularly in the eyes. You can barely see the details. The eyes are the most important thing to consider when taking portraits. Lighting, yes good. But it wasn't enough to give life to what gives life to a portrait: the eyes.

Thanks yo for the comments! actually, that was what i'm trying to salvage on that image... pero even the RAW file didn't store much details on the eyes. I'm waiting for another event like that (carshow sana!!!) to experiment on flash levels. I think I need to experiment more on capturing "ambient" feel on my portraits while using flash. Apir man!

killer smile talaga tong si Kathy ever since! whew. hehe.
ako what I do if the flash seem to give too much exposure to the shot (on TTL), either i set it manually (when I used your SB900 during toycon i was on manual mode, 1/64) or try to tilt the head 'away' from direct land to the subject.

Actually Yo, you gave me an idea on what to experiment next time. Nabanggit mo kasi that you are using manual flash last Sunday so i thought of doing the same thing next time. Siguro matrix-meter first in Aperture priority without flash, get exposure values, then use flash sabay adjust adjust flash power. Practice practice! hehehe...

like i once said to a user in TPC: practice doesn't make you perfect, but it will definitely make you better. hehe. as Allan said to me before, this D90 is a little more sensitive to light compared to the D40, and totoo nga. hence pinagaaralan ko ulit ang tamang bato ng flash when taking shots.

I think medyo underexposed yung shot mo paps, giving less detail sa eyes. hehe.. wala akong magawa kaya eto nalang.. yan lang ang nakayanan kong habulin sa photoshop+LR hehe

Rate the image from 1 to 5:
my rate will be 3
What do you think of this image?
I would not use the term "snapshot" coz snapshots are taken and portraits are made.
portraiture is capturing the essence, personality, expression of the person. No matter how soft/hard your light, DOF you use, with ambient lights or without.
If your subject has an akward, unnatural expression/pose, that will not creaate a good portrait.
What are your main criticisms?
A little soft on my taste, the skin tones is not natural (reddish on part of the face and neutral neck below(might be the cause of improperly set white balance...), the skin looks plastic (overly done in post processing... I want to see textures of the skin).
Final Verdict?
if you are on portraiture always think of your subject, the right place/part to focus, lights, ambient, the expression, composition, perspective, and pose.
Get your subject's attention and focus on her eyes (unless it is a creative intention). If the eyes are in focus, the picture will *look* in focus.
cheers!
